My first hunt

Let me take you back in time…

I was born 1982 in Sarajevo, what is now Bosnia and Hercegovina, back then it was still called Yugoslavia.

Like all other boys my age I loved to play with toy guns…I know now days somebody feels that toy guns might be an inappropriate toy for children, but I assure you it was perfectly normal back then 😊

I had all kinds of toy guns, but I wanted something that looked more real, more like a hunting rifle…

I can remember that me and my friends back then always had an argument on who’s toys was more realistic…actually we could get in fights over this back then which is pretty funny to think about now…but I assure you it was perfectly normal for young boys to get in fights back then.

Me and my friends used to play outside a lot…yeah, the times were different back then…we had no computers, playstation or mobile phones…we were outside most of the day playing around…

I remember that someone in our neighborhood were hunters and we all stopped playing for a second when they were getting ready to go hunting so we could see if we could get to see their rifles… and some time they would show their rifles to us at close range…still remember this rifle…it was a “Zastava” rifle…like the most of the hunters back then at the time in former Yugoslavia the hunters from our neighborhood had this Yugoslav produced hunting rifle.

I tell you guys it was a sweet looking rifle…In my mind there was nothing in the world that could come close to this gun…it was just perfect in my eyes…

I don’t know what model it was or anything else other than it was a “Zastava”

We looked up to these hunters like they were something taken out of a fairytale or like gods…hard to describe this feeling if you never had the same experience…in short, we looked up to them and were doing all we could to look like the hunters from our neighborhood.

I think this is where I got interested in hunting…I wanted to be like our neighbors…I wanted to be a hunter…

One day my father came back from a business trip and he had a big box under his arm when he got in the house that was wrapped in gift paper. He gave me the box and I can remember I felt it was so heavy. I could barely hold it…I put it down on the floor and I started to unwrap it…maybe my mind is playing a trick on me right now but I’m sure that it took what seams forever to remove the wrapping paper…and then I finally removed enough paper to see what it was…In my head today I still see a picture of the most beautiful toy ever made…it was a beautifully made hunting rifle toy with real wood and steel and it had optics on it. It was the toy I dreamt about 😊

Looked exactly like the neighbor hunters “Zastava” rifle, and I can’t explain how happy I was…thinking about it almost got me crying while typing this text…

Needless to say, that after that day we boys stopped fighting about who had the most realistic toy gun/ rifle…I felt like a King 😊

I’m not sure if I was 7 or 8 years old when I was on my first real hunt, but I remember it as it was yesterday…

I went to visit some family during a vacation from school that lived in a village in the mountains.

We arrived late in the evening, I can remember it was dark when we got to the house, but as soon as I entered the house I was blown away with all the trophy’s that were all over the place…

I quickly realized that my cousin that lived there was a hunter. He was older than me…much older…he was around 25 at the time.

I had a million questions for him about hunting, animals, guns…and he really tried to explain everything to me…I can still remember some moments there that evening…the moment where he showed me his guns, when he talked about his trophy’s…

I can remember that there was one trophy in particular that caught my attention… It was a taxidermized capercaillie…I have never seen this bird before…I can remember I said than to myself one day I will have the same bird in my trophy room…

I can only remember some fractions of the evening…me asking a lot of questions and he is trying his best to give me an answer…but one thing I will not forget as long as I will live….

As I was asking him all these questions and he tried to give me the answers…all of the sudden he said “I’m going to hunt tomorrow you should come with me and bring you rifle also”

Maybe I did not mention this before but since I got my toy rifle I had it with me all the time…only time when my toy rifle was not with me was when I went to school…anyways I don’t think I had any sleep that night…I was looking forward to the early morning when we will go out hunting…

The next day early in the morning we went to hunt together, and it was a season for Roebucks. We hiked op the mountain and I was not asking any questions no more…I was being quiet and enjoying every moment of the trip…I was anxious to see what the day will bring…

We arrived at the place where he had a stand (Shooting tower)

We got in to the tower and he gave me his binoculars and told me to keep an eye out 😊 I can remember I felt like a real hunter…only thing that was on my head was “ I hope a buck gets out in the open  from the forest”… “I hope I spot the buck”…

This one is mine from the year 2018

I have seen some other animals while looking for the roe deer and everything was just amazing…the nature, the animals, the sunrise…every single image from that day is still in my head and are the memories I will cherish all my life…

I can remember my cousin showing me the direction where to look with the binoculars….And there he was …the prince of forest…a roe buck…my cousin have off course seen the buck first 😊

I can still remember how fast my heart was beating and how exited I was…But I did not show my excited…I was quite as I ever was…I didn’t move…I was afraid I might make some noise that could scare the buck away…

My cousin told me quite to put down binoculars and hold my ears…I did so…he took aim and fired…the buck jumped up in the air and started started running…I think I remember I was a little bit disappointed for a second thinking that my cousin have missed…but only for a second because he said “he is down”

We got down from the tower and went to the place where the roebuck where…and sure enough there were blood… we looked in the direction where he ran and we could see the buck lying on the ground not far away from where he was shot…not sure how far…maybe 15 maybe even 50 meters…but we could se him.

We went over to the buck and my heart was beating even more…we got close and my cousin asked me to stay there for a moment, so he can check if the buck was dead. I stayed put and he went to check the buck…my heart was pumping faster and faster…all of the sudden he waved at me and asked me to come and have a look.

I came closer by and was excited about the fact that we had success on the hunt and I was there and experienced it all…I remember I looked at this buck and I was not sad…I was happy about the success we had on the hunt…

Sorry to say but many people now days would say “Ohh what is wrong with you” “You guys shot bambi” and things like this…Yeah this is the truth in many places around the world…sadly many people have forgot that the mankind have hunted animals since the beginning of time…

On our way back to the house my cousin told me he will prepare the trophy for me so next time I come and visit I can take it home with me…

I was so proud and could not wait to come home and tell my friends all about the trip…

I don’t need to tell you that after that I came to visit my cousin as often possible and it was by far my most favorite place to be every time I had free from school 😊

My cousin did made the trophy of the buck for me and I got to take it home with me…he also bought me a some hunting clothes next time I came to visit…we went on so many hunting trips together until the war came to our country…

I’ll tell you all about the other hunting trips with my cousin some other time…war I don’t like to talk about…all I can say is “Make peace not war”

That’s it for now and I hope you enjoyed reading my first post

Good luck, skit jakt, Knæk og bræk to all of you hunters out there

Hope to see you again for my next post 😊
